Baumgartner Commends UW and Law Enforcement for Swift Response to Dangerous Building Occupation

May 6, 2025

WASHINGTON- Today, Congressman Michael Baumgartner (WA-05) issued the following statement in response to the University of Washington’s handling of the unlawful occupation of the Interdisciplinary Engineering Building Monday evening:

“I want to commend the University of Washington, UW Police, and the multiple law enforcement agencies involved for their swift, coordinated, and professional response to a deeply troubling and dangerous situation on campus,” said Congressman Baumgartner. “What occurred Monday night was not a peaceful protest—it was criminal activity. The unlawful occupation of university property, the use of fire, the obstruction of public streets, and the intimidation of others reflect a blatant disregard for the rule of law, public safety, and the values of civil discourse.”

Baumgartner added, “There is no place for hate—especially antisemitism—on our campuses or anywhere in our society. UW was right to make clear it will not be intimidated by destructive and bigoted behavior. This is a critical moment for our institutions to stand firm. When laws are broken and hate is expressed, there must be consequences. Washingtonians deserve to know that our campuses are safe, secure, and guided by principle.”
